Here are the top three stories today in Corpus Christi:

  1. A sunset vigil is scheduled to take place on Jul. 8 at J.P. Luby Beach in the Coastal Bend to honor the more than 1 million Americans who lost their lives to COVID-19. The event is organized by Yellow Heart Memorial in collaboration with Fence of Love, Coastal Bends Hearts, and The Robert Villegas Foundation. Attendees are encouraged to wear white, bring photos of loved ones, and a battery-operated candle to commemorate the lives lost during the pandemic. (KIII 3)
  2. A fatal crash occurred on Alameda Street and Ennis Joslin Road in Corpus Christi late Tuesday night. The collision involved a car and a motorcycle, with the car making a left turn in front of the motorcycle, leading to the crash. The victim, Marcos Colunga, 23, lost his life in the accident, and the driver of the car was cited for failure to yield while making a left turn. The investigation into the crash resulted in a temporary road closure overnight. (KIII 3)
  3. The synchronized swimmers at Mirador Senior Living in Corpus Christi, with an average age of 81, use the pool to practice and stay active. Led by team captain Trudy Kenyon, they dedicate eight hours a day to swimming, building strength, and maintaining balance. The team, consisting of nine swimmers and one mermaid, performed a routine to the tunes of Disney's Little Mermaid in celebration of the Fourth of July, emphasizing the active lifestyle and sense of community at Mirador Senior Living. Nueces County Emergency Service District 2 responded to the fires and successfully extinguished them by 11:20 p.m. The exact number of fires caused by fireworks is still being determined by investigators.   • This Friday, Jul. 7, Gulf Coast Capital Night will be held at Whataburger Field, offering an opportunity to showcase Corpus Christi pride. Attendees can enjoy a Corpus Christi Hooks baseball game, freebies, photo opportunities, and an impressive firework show.
