2 Texas Children Die After Being Locked In Hot Car

The mother of the children told authorities that the two had managed to lock themselves inside a car when temperatures reached 96 degrees.

WEATHERFORD, TX — Two children, a 16-month-old boy and a two-year-old girl, have died after authorities say they were locked in a hot car in Texas Friday afternoon.

Local news channel WFAA reports that investigators with the Parker County Sheriff's Office were called to the 200 block of Rambling Loop in the town of Weatherford, located about an hour west of Dallas, just after 4 p.m.

The children's mother told authorities she had been periodically checking on the children who were playing in a back room but at around 4 p.m. she couldn't find them, according to the WFAA report. She said she then discovered her two children had locked themselves in the car in the front seat as temperatures reached 96 degrees.

The Dallas Morning News reports that the mother called authorities to report that her children "took off" when she couldn't find them. She reportedly broke a window to get to the children, who were unresponsive.

The children, identified as Juliet and Cavanaugh Ramirez, were pronounced deceased just after 4:30 p.m., the paper reports.

The investigation is in its early stages and it's unclear if any charges will be brought.
