9 Homes Destroyed, Many More Damaged In Texas Fire
A grass fire started in Balch Springs when mowers hit debris, and it quickly spread into a nearby neighborhood. No injuries were reported.

BALCH SPRINGS, TX — Nine homes were totally destroyed and more than 20 damaged in a grass fire that spread to a Balch Springs neighborhood Monday afternoon, according to multiple reports.
Workers who were mowing a large field around 3:15 p.m. in the Dallas suburb struck debris, generating a spark that started the fire near Interstate 20 and South Belt Line Road. The fire quickly spread into the nearby Spring Ridge neighborhood, according to authorities.
No injuries have been reported, but dozens of people have been forced from their homes.

The Balch Springs Fire Department responded within minutes with a brush fire truck and an engine, but quickly called for support from surrounding fire departments, Balch Springs Fire Marshal Sean Davis told NBC 5 in an interview.
The fire was exacerbated by drought conditions and the tall grass in the field, but firefighters from more than 10 agencies helped contain the blaze by Monday evening, Davis said.

Firefighters worked overnight putting out hotspots and ensuring the fire was totally out.
In total, 26 structures suffered some form of damage, which can include damages to fences, Davis said.
Houses on Broadview Drive and Bell Manor Court were most affected, and authorities are asking people to avoid the area, according to the Balch Springs Police Department.
The Balch Springs Recreation Center, located at 4372 Shepherd Lane, is accepting people who need shelter because of the fire. The American Red Cross and Balch Springs Emergency Management are working to make arrangements for people who have been displaced.
Authorities are directing people who wish to help those affected by the fire to the Opal J Smith Food Pantry. The largest need is for gift cards, especially to food establishments, according to Balch Springs police.
