Here are the top three stories today in Dallas:
- The first human case of the West Nile virus for the 2023 season was reported in Dallas. On Monday, the Dallas County Health and Human Services Department confirmed the case and said that the infected Dallas man was diagnosed with the more severe version of the disease, West Nile neuroinvasive disease (WNND). West Nile Virus can be transmitted to humans by bites from infected mosquitos — in an effort to avoid a bite, you can use DEET insect repellent, drain standing water, and dress in long sleeves and pants when outside. (NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth)
- The City of Dallas is participating in a national project alongside 18 other communities to map out the hottest parts of the city. The city is seeking volunteer citizen scientists to help with the project by driving cars with mounted heat sensors through their neighborhoods in the morning, afternoon, and evening on one of the hottest days of the year. The data collected will help inform decisions on cooling projects, tree planting, and other climate action strategies. (CultureMap Dallas)
- Dallas Restaurant Week is coming up soon, beginning on Aug. 7. This year, hundreds of area restaurants will participate in the weeklong foodie event. Start making reservations now to ensure you get a spot, and check out Eater's list of top-recommended places to grab a bite during the week, like Don Artemio and Jalisco Norte. (Eater Dallas)
