Here are the top three stories in Dallas today:

  1. The City of Dallas has joined the Smart Surfaces Coalition, along with other major cities, to explore materials for infrastructure that can reduce heat retention. They aim to develop light-colored or reflective surfaces to combat the urban heat island effect, which can raise temperatures by up to five degrees in cities like Dallas during the summer. The initiative seeks to cool neighborhoods, lower energy expenses for residents, and mitigate the impact of flash flooding events, while also considering alternatives like reflective roofs, porous pavements, and increased tree cover. (KRLD)
  2. In Northwest Dallas, a shooting incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday, resulting in one person's death and leaving three others hospitalized. The shooting took place near Bachman Lake Park, where someone in a vehicle opened fire on the victims before driving away. Residents in the area expressed concerns about the recurring gun violence, and police are urging anyone with information to come forward to aid the investigation. (FOX 4 News Dallas-Fort Worth)
  3. Following a fire at Saintsville Church of God in Christ in Dallas, church leaders are now in talks about the rebuilding process. The fire, which occurred on Tuesday, Jul. 18, resulted in damage to multiple classrooms and the fellowship hall. Although services inside the church didn't take place over the weekend, the lead pastor plans to hold Zoom meetings soon to keep the church community informed about the forthcoming actions, while the cause of the fire remains undisclosed.
