The Star on the Mountain will flash 23 times in honor of the victims of the August 3, 2019 tragedy.

EL PASO, TEXAS –  On August 3, 2021, the El Paso Chamber will flash the Star on the Mountain 23 times in honor of the 23 victims of the August 3 tragedy. The names of each victim will be read by Mayor Oscar Leeser in the parking lot of Superior Copy Machines located at 2001 Grant Ave. The Star will begin flashing at 8:30 PM MST.

“We wanted to do what we could to honor the victims, grieve for El Paso, and help our community heal,” El Paso President and CEO David Jerome said. “For 80 years the Star on the Mountain has been a symbol for El Paso—a symbol that means hope, that means unity, that means home. We wanted to show El Paso that even in these socially distanced times we are a community and together we are ‘El Paso Strong.’”

First built in 1940, the Star on the Mountain has become an iconic feature of the El Paso skyline. While the property the Star is located on is not accessible to the public, the Star on the Mountain is visible from Downtown, Central, and East of the Franklin Mountains and was designed to be optimally viewed from the corner of Texas Avenue and Alameda Avenue.
