3. City offers extra trash and Christmas tree collection (crossroadstoday.com) — Victoria residents can set out extra bagged trash beside their carts on their regular pickup day from Dec. 29 through Jan. 2, without needing it to fit in the bin. Starting Jan. 5, live, undecorated Christmas trees will be collected on normal yard waste days, but artificial or flocked trees are excluded.

4. How a rancher and a nonprofit teamed up to protect 6,600 acres of Texas prairie (star-telegram.com) — A massive 6,600-acre conservation deal on the O’Connor Ranch, led by a former Victoria County sheriff, is permanently protecting coastal prairie just down the road in Goliad County. The easement, funded largely by Deepwater Horizon penalties and managed by The Nature Conservancy, keeps this habitat from being subdivided or developed and could guide how other South Texas ranch families, including those around Victoria, balance ranching and conservation.
