How Your Neighbors Make Their Homes Unappealing To Burglars

See how three different people stopped potential intruders in their tracks.

Break-ins and burglaries can happen in any neighborhood. So how can you make your house less appealing to would-be burglars? The answer is simple: Make it clear that your home is protected.

Install Visible Security Cameras

Shannon Thompson, a homeowner in Goodyear, Arizona, credits her Ring Video Doorbell for sending two snooping strangers scrambling. As Thompson told Phoenix's local news stations CBS 5 and 3TV, she wasn’t home when she received a real-time notification on her phone that showed the two men peering into the windows by her front door.

The men continued scoping out the scene and then walked away. Moments later, they returned to peer inside Thompson's home again. This time, one of the men was putting on a glove.

But before the man with the glove even attempted to open the door, something caught his eye. "Oh," he said, stopping in his tracks. "They have a Ring. Whoa."

"Whoa," echoed the other man. They both backed away from the house quickly and fled.

"They knew exactly what the Ring system was," said Thompson after viewing a video of the incident. "He called it by name. He said, 'They have the Ring,' and they took off."

Prevent Break-ins Before They Occur

Jake, a Los Angeles resident, credits his Ring Security Camera with helping him stop a burglary before it could happen. He said he purchased the Ring Floodlight Cam "because of previous incidents in the neighborhood," and just a few days later, he received a notification on his phone letting him know that two men were prowling in his backyard.

"Hey," he said, addressing them in real time using the Floodlight Cam's two-way talk feature. "HEY!"

The men heard Jake and ran away quickly.

Help Deter Neighborhood Crimes

An Edmonton, Canada, resident named Clem says his Ring Video Doorbell Pro helped him scare off two would-be burglars. In October 2019, Clem received a notification on the Ring app that showed the two men — disguised as a utility worker and a crossing guard — attempting to gain entry to his home.

One of the men put on gloves and was forcefully trying to wedge open the door.
"Get away from the door!" Clem ordered, addressing the men through his Ring Video Doorbell Pro.

Both men were visibly startled and ran away quickly.

Clem's house was undamaged, and he was able to turn the video of the incident over to law enforcement. "Edmonton Police Service and Calgary Police Service have both mentioned that the video that was captured is amazing," Clem said, "and [it's] greatly assisting them into their separate investigations into the same two individuals."

Clem said he's "so impressed" with what the Ring Video Doorbell Pro helped him to do that he's "now looking into outfitting my home and office with [Ring's] security camera offerings."
