Collin Morikawa Wins 2020 PGA Championship In San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO, CA — Collin Morikawa, a 23-year-old who became a professional golfer just a year ago, has won the 2020 PGA Championship. The Los Angeles-born Morikawa shot a -13 at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, finishing two strokes ahead of Paul Casey and Dustin Johnson to clinch the win in the first major golf tournament held in 2020.

Morikawa's major championship at TPC Harding occurred just 20 miles across the bay from the University of California-Berkley, where he earned a degree in business administration in 2019. The PGA champion went to high school in La Cañada, California.

Sunday was the fourth day of play from TPC Harding Park, with 156 golfers teeing off on Thursday. Tiger Woods' pairing included Rory McIlroy and Justin Thomas, who entered the tournament as its co-favorite.

Brooks Koepka was the back-to-back defending champion and sought to become the first golfer to win three consecutive PGA championships since Ben Hogan won five in a row from 1923 to 1927. Koepka was tied for third entering Sunday play but eventually fell out of the top five.

The PGA Championship had traditionally been held in August, but was moved to May in 2019. It returned to August this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Scheduling adjustments forced by the pandemic also meant the PGA Championship was the first major golf tournament held in 2020.

Due to the pandemic, spectators weren't in attendance at the championship — a first in the history of U.S. major golf championships. It was also the first major championship ever held at TPC Harding Park.
