Why One NASCAR Driver's Partnership With GoodRx Is A Win For All

Will Rodgers, who's racing at the Charlotte Roval on Saturday, knows firsthand how important good health is for success.

For NASCAR Xfinity driver Will Rodgers, access to quality health care helped put him on the winning path he’s on today. That path includes Rodgers competing in the upcoming Drive for the Cure 250 on Saturday, Oct. 9.

As a child, Rodgers was diagnosed with primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), a chronic liver disease. It was a diagnosis that likely would not have been made as early as it was without a visit to Dr. Ali Mehrizi, a well-respected pediatrician in Easton, Maryland. Dr. Mehrizi, concerned by Rodgers’ symptoms, had him rushed to The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he would then receive treatment.

The Start Of A Victorious Career

Upon recovering from his condition, Rodgers soon began his storied career in racing. At the age of 8, the Maui, Hawaii-born driver was introduced to go-karting, and in just 18 months he won the Hawaii state championship in karting. Following his family’s move to California, Rodgers continued racing and accumulating accolades in the sport. He became a regional champion in motocross racing, a stadium series champion in off-road UTVs and a 2015 West Coast NASA champion in sports car racing.

As a NASCAR Xfinity driver and founder of the Will Rodgers Liver Health Foundation, Rodgers now has the opportunity to bring awareness to the cause he’s passionate about: liver health issues. Part of the mission for the Will Rodgers Liver Health Foundation is to “fill the gaps for those affected with liver health issues by providing education, testing resources and a link to care.”

Rodgers’ passion for this cause has already proved to be a rewarding experience. He revealed that an American Liver Foundation decal on his car once inspired a crew member to share a health diagnosis of their own with their family.

“It was pretty incredible because we barely even tried,” Rodgers said. “We pretty much just put logos on the car and went racing, and we changed somebody’s life because of it.”

A Winning Partnership

Rodgers will soon hit the track at the Drive for the Cure 250 in Charlotte, North Carolina, and he'll be doing so in the yellow-and-black GoodRx / Race to End Hep C Toyota Supra to help raise awareness of good health in the NASCAR community.

With a focus on making health care more accessible for all Americans, GoodRx helps Americans get the medications they need at a price they can afford. Their searchable online database lets users search for the medication they need, compare prices across pharmacies and use the GoodRx app or print out coupons to bring to their local pharmacy. GoodRx believes this partnership with Rodgers will be an invaluable way not only to make more people aware of the helpful products, services, and resources they offer, but also to increase awareness of the importance of good health on one’s overall quality of life.

As a survivor of PSC, Rodgers has adopted a liver healthy lifestyle that includes high-quality food, a rigorous fitness routine and limited drinking of alcoholic beverages. For those on their own path to incorporating a healthier lifestyle, GoodRx can be used as a resource for diet and nutrition tips and overall well-being. The GoodRx Health hub also allows those with specific conditions to find the answers they need from doctors, pharmacists and journalists.

GoodRx is proud to work with Rodgers and his team. For those eager to cheer him on, Rodgers is competing Saturday (Oct. 9) at the Drive for the Cure 250 in Charlotte, North Carolina which will air live on NBC at 3 p.m. EST.
