Avalanche Danger High In Salt Lake Mountains: Utah Avalance Center

In the last 24 hours, the snowpack has more than doubled and south winds overnight averaged 20-30 miles per hour.

SALT LAKE CITY, UT – Avalanche danger today is high at mid-and-upper elevations in Salt Lake Area mountains and considerable in lower elevations, according to Mark Staples of the Utah Avalanche Center.

“There are many ways for an avalanche to break today,” wrote Staples, adding that in the last 24 hours the snowpack more than doubled and south winds overnight averaged 20-30 miles per hour and gusted 40-50 miles per hour.

Some snowfall is expected to continue today through this evening but winds will slow, according to the National Weather Service.
