📰 News we're reading

1. Salt Lake City International Airport ranked #2 for most reliable airport right before holiday travel rush (kslnewsradio.com) — Salt Lake City International Airport is ranked the nation’s second most reliable airport, with very low cancellation and delay rates just as Christmas travel ramps up. Officials credit the airport’s modern runways and all-weather readiness, and they’re also leaning into festive decorations and kid-friendly touches to ease stress for families passing through Salt Lake City this season.

2. How Salt Lake City will remain at the ‘heart' of Utah 2034 Olympics despite name change (ksltv.com) — Salt Lake City leaders are working with Utah 2034 Olympic organizers to keep the capital at the center of the Games, even after “Salt Lake City” was dropped from the official name. Plans include resident-focused experiences, managing downtown security impacts, and major projects like the Salt Palace redesign, a downtown green loop, and a new light-rail link to the airport and University of Utah.

3. Capitol board votes to move auditor's office amid dispute over space in Utah Capitol (ksl.com) — State leaders on the Capitol Preservation Board have voted to move the Utah state auditor’s office to a different space inside the Capitol in Salt Lake City, despite objections from Auditor Tina Cannon. Cannon argues the relocation process skirted open-meeting and space-allocation laws and could undermine her office’s independence, especially as it audits ongoing Capitol construction projects.

4. West Jordan mom charged with fleeing country with her 4 kids, breaking custodial agreements (fox13now.com) — Salt Lake County prosecutors have charged a West Jordan mother with custodial interference after investigators say she flew out of Salt Lake City International Airport with her four children on one-way tickets to Europe. Court documents describe growing fears about “end times,” abandoned custody exchanges, and an ongoing effort to locate the children, who are now believed to be overseas.

5. ‘Drive sober': DPS announces enhanced holiday DUI enforcement, releases preliminary 2025 crash data (abc4.com) — Salt Lake City drivers are being warned that Utah’s Department of Public Safety is ramping up DUI enforcement through the holidays, with more than 250 extra patrol shifts statewide. Officials, speaking from Salt Lake City, say preliminary 2025 data links 67 of 250 traffic deaths to impaired driving and nearly 11,000 DUI arrests so far. Residents are urged to plan sober rides and call 911 about suspected drunk drivers.
