📰 News we're reading

1. Salt Lake City opens Phase One of the new Glendale Park at former Ragi... (cityweekly.net) — Salt Lake City has opened Phase One of the new Glendale Regional Park on the former Raging Waters site, giving residents an all-abilities playground, pickleball courts, walking paths, and more. The 17-acre space now connects neighbors to nature and the Jordan River, with future phases adding skating, water features, and a kayak launch by 2028.

2. Highway traffic stops and midnight roundups: How ICE tactics in Utah have transformed (deseret.com) — Federal immigration enforcement tactics centered on the ICE Salt Lake City field office and nearby communities are shifting toward more street arrests, traffic stops, and late-night operations, alarming many local immigrants and advocates. Attorneys and activists in Salt Lake City report rising arrests of people without criminal records, protests at the USCIS office, and hundreds of anti-ICE signs posted at local businesses as federal officials defend the stepped-up enforcement.

3. Utah's growth experienced a 'significant shift' in 2025. These were the fastest-growing counties (ksl.com) — Salt Lake City residents are part of a statewide population shift where natural growth, not in-migration, is again driving Utah’s expansion. New estimates show Utah County adding the most people, Salt Lake County close behind, and Salt Lake City itself recently leading all Utah cities in growth, even as high housing costs appear to slow newcomers.

4. New Utah Government Records director hits city over missing surveillance video (ksltv.com) — Utah’s new Government Records Office has sharply criticized West Valley City for failing to fully search for or explain missing surveillance video from an alleged assault at a city fitness center. A Salt Lake City-based First Amendment attorney says the ruling sends a strong message to all Utah agencies about taking public-records requests seriously and documenting how footage is handled.

5. Scam calls are on the rise ahead of the holidays, officials warn (fox13now.com) — Salt Lake City officials are warning residents about a surge in holiday scam calls, especially schemes where AI-cloned voices pretend to be grandchildren in distress. Utah’s consumer protection director urges families to limit what kids and grandparents share online, establish a secret password for emergencies, and treat requests for cryptocurrency or gift cards as major red flags.
