Here are the top three stories in Salt Lake City today:
- This year, rather than shooting off fireworks, Salt Lake City is flying platoons of drones into the air due to air quality concerns. Although this is an expensive alternative, it is something city officials believe is worthwhile, attempting to remain considerate of air quality issues as well as noise. With the temperatures being so high, it is important to take extra caution if you do intend on shooting fireworks, making sure you are doing so legally as well as making sure you are safely disposing of fireworks to avoid fires. (FOX 13 News Utah)
- Over the weekend, 29-year-old Anthony Thomas of Salt Lake received several charges relating to the abusive treatment of a 5-year-old boy. According to reports, Thomas was caring for the child between May 5 and Jun. 15; when the boy's mother attempted to pick up her son early, Thomas told her that he needed to stay longer and heal. When she was finally able to pick up her child, she noticed several injuries to her child, which the child reported came from Thomas; upon going to the Primary Children's Hospital, more injuries were noticed as well as burns and potentially long-standing issues. Thomas was arrested and is currently being held in Salt Lake County Jail without bail, pending his trial. (KSL.com)
- The $25,000 Utah Treasure Hunt is getting people from throughout the area out and about searching for the cash prize. David Cline and John Maxim started the treasure hunt during the pandemic as a fun way to get out and keep people entertained; not only has the prize risen from $5,000 but the number of people participating in the hunt has jumped. As of the time of publication, it has been six weeks since the first clue and no one has found the treasure yet. (KSLTV)
