The theft turned a cherished neighborhood tradition into a small Christmas mystery, and they’re hoping whoever took it quietly returns the Shrek-style gingerbread figure so the display — and the holiday spirit — can feel complete again.
   

2. Utah's self-defense laws in spotlight following two high-profile cases (kjzz.com) — Utah’s self-defense laws are under scrutiny after a June 2025 shooting during a downtown Salt Lake City march and a separate deadly road-rage case in Wasatch County. Prosecutors, a former Salt Lake County deputy DA, and the law’s sponsor weigh in on how the 2021 “justification hearing” process is changing which self-defense cases move forward to trial.

The University of Utah expands its Master of Business Creation program to a third continent — Europe (deseret.com) — Salt Lake City’s David Eccles School of Business is using a major Lassonde family donation to push its Master of Business Creation program from a local headquarters to a truly global footprint, now adding several European countries. The program, run out of the University of Utah’s Lassonde Entrepreneur Institute and Lassonde Studios in Salt Lake City, offers affordable, hands-on support to founders already running real businesses and is accepting applications for its August 2026 global cohort.
   

4. California mother scheduled to appear in court after missing 9-year-old found dead in Utah (kjzz.com) — From a Salt Lake City-based report, Utah authorities are still investigating the killing of 9-year-old Melodee Buzzard, whose remains were found in Wayne County while her mother faces an initial court appearance in California. Investigators are searching for the missing murder weapon, while community members mourn, warn about fraudulent online fundraisers, and consider a candlelight vigil as Melodee’s body remains in Utah awaiting transport home.
   

5. Heber City community stepping up to support coach battling ALS (fox13now.com) — A Heber City family is rallying community support to fund an $82,000 mobility van so coach and ALS patient Patrick Dettman can more easily reach doctors’ appointments in Salt Lake City and enjoy simple outings like holiday lights. Local teams, a dealership, and friends have launched a GoFundMe, helping the longtime Wasatch High coach focus on gratitude, family time, and meaningful moments this Christmas.
