Here are the top three stories today in Salt Lake City:

  1. Earlier this week, a digital street traffic sign in Salt Lake City was changed to an explicit message on State Street. One unexpected driver was able to catch the vulgar message as they were traveling near 7200 South at 2:30 a.m.; although it is vandalism, the driver reportedly thought of it more as a harmless prank. Although it has not been determined who or how the message was changed, UDOT is taking full responsibility for the incident and intends to sharpen up security. (KUTV 2News)
  2. Patrice Ann Winward of Salt Lake City was sentenced to at least 15 years of prison time after shooting and killing her girlfriend Nicole Carter after an argument. The incident occurred on Aug. 17, 2021, around 3:30 a.m. near 900 W. South Temple when the two were riding bikes and got into a heated argument; Carter attempted to ride away from Winward when Winward shot several times in her direction and hit her fatally in the torso. Officers arrived at the scene to see Winward performing CPR on the victim and then quickly made an excuse to leave the scene and dispose of the weapon that was later retrieved. Many of the charges were dropped in a plea deal; however, Winward has a criminal history in Utah and will be serving for this crime. (KSL.com)
  3. Yesterday the Gallivan Center celebrated 30 years of being a staple in Salt Lake City with its "Big Band Dance Night" from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. The festivities included food trucks, vendors, as well as live music, and even dance lessons. The Gallivan Center is in the heart of Salt Lake and provides the community and visitors with several memorable moments like concerts, art galleries, festivals, and so much more.
