Police Identify Pedestrian Killed in Fatal Crash on Little River Turnpike

Police say the woman was hit by a truck while she was walking across Little River Turnpike Thursday night.

FAIRFAX COUNTY, VA -- (UPDATE 4:40 p.m.) The woman pedestrian who died in Thursday night's crash on Little River Turnpike has been identified by police as Waneta M. Achaj, 58, of Alexandria, police announced Friday afternoon.

The woman was crossing Little River Turnpike Thursday night when she was hit by a truck and later died, Fairfax County Police announced Friday morning.

Officers responded to the intersection of Little River Turnpike and Braddock Road (see map below) in the Lincolnia area around 8 p.m. Thursday, for a report of a pedestrian who was struck by a 2002 Ford F150.
Police say preliminary investigation determined the driver, a 59-year-old man, had a green light and turned right on to eastbound Little River Turnpike from Braddock Road when he struck the woman. The driver remained on scene.

The woman was crossing Little River Turnpike from north to south outside of the crosswalk and was wearing a dark jacket and no reflective clothing, police said. No word from police on whether street lights were working in the area.

She was taken to a local hospital, where she died, police said.

Detectives from the Crash Reconstruction Unit (CRU) responded to the scene to investigate. Police said neither speed nor alcohol appear to be contributing factors to the crash. The investigation is ongoing.
