18 VA Hospitals Among Nation’s Best: U.S. News Ranking
Eighteen hospitals in Virginia are among the best in the country, according to new rankings released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.

VIRGINIA —Eighteen hospitals in Virginia are among the best in the country, according to new Best Hospitals rankings released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.
The 34th edition of the rankings recognizes the top 484 regional hospitals, as well as the top 22 “honor roll” hospitals. Hospitals that made the ranking achieved excellence across a range of specialties, U.S. News said, and includes institutions like Johns Hopkins, the Cleveland Clinic and the Mayo Clinic.
Once again, Inova Fairfax Hospital was named the top hospital in Virginia and the Washington, D.C. area, receiving high marks in several specialties, including gastroenterology, neurology, pulmonology and aortic valve surgery.

For obstetrics and gynecology, Inova Fairfax Hospital was ranked 18th in the nation. Inova Fairfax Hospital was the only hospital in Virginia to make the top 50 ranking in the nation for a specialty, according to U.S. News.
"Being honored as the top hospital in our region for three consecutive years is an extraordinary achievement, and one we do not take for granted," Steve Narang MD, president of the Inova Fairfax Medical Campus, said in a statement Tuesday. "We owe this success to the collective efforts of our dedicated team of medical professionals, team members and partners who work every day to deliver the highest standard of patient-centered care."

Inova Fair Oaks Hospital and Inova Alexandria Hospital ranked tied for 9th in Virginia.
VCU Medical Center moved up from 3rd to 2nd best hospital in Virginia. The Richmond hospital was rated as high-performing in several specialties, including cancer, cardiology, gastroenterology and orthopedics.
University of Virginia Medical Center slipped from 2nd to 3rd best in the state in 2023, and rated as high-performing in cancer, gastroenterology, pulmonology, urology and aortic valve surgery.
Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington jumped from 12th best hospital in Virginia in 2022 to 5th best in 2023, according to U.S. News. Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg moved up from 10th best hospital in Virginia in 2022 to 7th best in 2023.

- No. 9 (tied): Chippenham and Johnston-Willis Hospitals, Richmond
- No. 9 (tied): Inova Alexandria Hospital, Alexandria
- No. 9 (tied): Inova Fair Oaks Hospital, Fairfax
- No. 12 (tied): Henrico Doctors' Hospital, Richmond
- No. 12 (tied): Centra Lynchburg General Hospital, Lynchburg
- No. 12 (tied): Bon Secours St. Francis Medical Center, Midlothian

U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 specialties and 21 procedures and conditions. Hospitals awarded a “best” designation excelled at factors such as clinical outcomes, quality of nursing care and patient experience.
This year, U.S. News said it placed more emphasis on objective quality measures and less on expert opinion. Other changes include the introduction of outpatient outcomes in key specialty and surgical rankings.
The rankings are meant to help patients and their doctors make health care decisions, according to Ben Harder, managing editor at U.S. News.

- Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, Los Angeles

- Mount Sinai Hospital, New York
