2021 Senior Olympics Return To Northern Virginia In September

Northern Virginia Senior Olympics return for the 36th year with a variety of competitions and new events to challenge seniors.

ARLINGTON, VA — Active adults 50 and older, there's still time to get in some practice laps or study your crossword dictionary before the start of the 39th season of the Northern Virginia Senior Olympics.

Local seniors will have an opportunity to compete in more than 50 events, including solving crossword puzzles, when the competition returns Sept. 18-30.

Festivities kick off with an opening ceremony on Saturday, Sept. 18, at 9:30 a.m., at the Thomas Jefferson Community Center, 2501 S. 2nd St., in Arlington.

Online registration for the senior olympics runs from Saturday, July 31, to Monday, Sept. 6. Past competitors will receive registration brochures in the mail. Brochures are also available at community centers and online. A registration fee of $15 covers multiple events.

In order to participate, athletes must have turned 50 by Dec. 31, 2021 and be residents of one of the following sponsoring jurisdictions:

  • Arlington County
  • Fairfax City
  • Fairfax County
  • Falls Church
  • Fauquier County
  • Loudoun County
  • Prince William County

All participants and volunteers must by fully vaccinated for COVID-19 and follow CDC protocols during competitions. All events are open to the public.

Gold, silver, and bronze medals will be awarded in each of the events, which include track and field, tennis, swimming, and sudoku, among many others. Crossword puzzles have been added as a new event this year.
