ARLINGTON, VA -- Amazon has officially started hiring for its second headquarters in Crystal City, the company announced on Monday.

The online retail giant has already leased hundreds of thousands of square feet of space in south Arlington, and the company says they expect to fill over 400 positions by the end of 2019 with a goal of 25,000 jobs over the next decade-plus. Amazon announced last November that Arlington had been chosen as the location of its second headquarters (a second site in New York was abandoned after local protests).

"We’ve enjoyed a warm welcome from the community and the strong support from state and local government has allowed us to make significant progress towards establishing our presence here," Amazon Vice President of Workforce Development Ardine Williams said in a statement. "Today marks an important step in the process as we lease office space and begin hiring. We will welcome our new employees to our temporary office space on Crystal Drive in June while we work toward opening our first building this fall."

Amazon posted its first five job listings here: three for a global category manager, one for a senior financial analyst, and one for a human resources specialist.

"Since the beginning of this year, the Amazon team has been working with community members, educators, and state and local experts on how to increase the talent available in this region to make Virginia an even more attractive destination for innovators large and small," Williams said. "We have a unique opportunity to build programs that both support the skills development necessary to create a pipeline for jobs at Amazon, and also increase the talent pool in the DMV."

Developer JBG Smith Properties, which owns most of the buildings in the Crystal City area, announced earlier this month that Amazon had leased more than 47,000 square feet of space at National Landing -- an area that encompasses Crystal City as well as parts of Pentagon City and Potomac Yard in Alexandria.

Specifically, Amazon signed a lease for space at 2345 Crystal Drive and will move in in the next few months. That now brings the total amount of space leased by Amazon in the area to 584,512 square feet.

"Amazon's additional investment in National Landing reflects their commitment and the warm welcome they have received through our public-private partnership with Arlington County and the Commonwealth of Virginia,"said JBG Smith CEO, Matt Kelly, in the statement. "The decision to increase their footprint right on Crystal Drive also further validates our repositioning of the retail main street in the submarket. Through our under construction Central District Retail, planned 1900 Crystal Drive projects, and others that will follow, we are creating an environment with strong appeal to a wide variety of commercial and residential tenants. We are thrilled to be able to accommodate Amazon's space needs throughout National Landing."
