Arlington Co. Board Results: Spain Wins First Rank Choice Voting Round

ARLINGTON, VA — With all precincts reporting, Democrat Julius D. "JD" Spain Sr. garnered the most votes in the first round of voting in the four-way race for the Arlington County Board, according to unofficial results reported by the Virginia Board of Elections.

Spain was facing Republican Juan C. Fierro, Future Party candidate Madison F. Granger and Independent Audrey R. Clement. The race is being conducted with ranked choice voting.

In the first round of voting, Spain was the leader with 54 of 54 precincts reporting.

  • Julius D. "JD" Spain, Sr. (D): 58,826 (58%)
  • Juan Carlos Fierro (R) 14,865 (16% )
  • Audrey Clement (I): 12,073 (13 %)
  • Madison Granger (F): 11,335 (12 %)
  • Write In: 1,086 (1 percent)

As of Oct. 24, Spain's campaign committee received a total of $203,414 in donations, according to the Virginia Public Access Project, which tracks campaign finance in the state. That’s nearly five times more in donation money than the $21,332 reported by Audrey Clement. By comparison, Forward Party candidate Granger raised $11,419 and Fierro brought in $9,545.

Clement has a Ph.D. in political science from Temple University and has more than 20 years of experience as a computer programmer. From 2018-2019, she served on the Arlington County Transportation Commission.

Fierro, who earned a bachelor of arts in government and politics, is a financial advisor with 26 years of experience. As the lone Hispanic in the race, he hopes to bring different perspectives to the Board that will better address the needs of minorities in Arlington.

Granger, a personal trainer and group fitness instructor, earned a bachelor of arts from Duke University (English major, Political Science minor) / Master's of Management Studies from Duke's Fuqua School of Business.

Spain, a retired U.S. Marine and senior business consultant, has a bachelor of science in political science from the University of Maryland, University College. He is also a former president of the NAACP Arlington Branch and regional vice president of the Virginia State Conference NAACP
