Arlington Police Deploy To Puerto Rico For Hurricane Relief

Twelve Arlington County Police officers volunteered to deploy to Puerto Rico to assist in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

ARLINGTON, VA — Twelve Arlington County Police officers volunteered to deploy to Puerto Rico to assist in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

The officers will deploy in three staggered teams between Nov. 10 and Dec. 18, according to a police news release.

“Our officers take an oath to serve and protect and their willingness to deploy shows their commitment and dedication, not just to the Arlington County community, but to citizens everywhere,” Police Chief M. Jay Farr said in a statement.

The Emergency Management Assistance Compact (EMAC), which is the national emergency management mutual aid system that facilitates state-to-state disaster assistance, requested the officers help.

Maria hit Puerto Rico hard on September 20 with winds of up to 154mph. About 230,000 homes were destroyed, officials said. More than six weeks after Maria touched down, 60 percent of Puerto Rico is still without power, according to CNN.
