ARLINGTON, VA — Is it a suit of armor? Is it a gorilla suit? Is it a banana? No, it's Anything Goes at Yorktown High School! In the golden age classic, Yorktown transports audiences aboard the S.S. American, complete with powerhouse vocalists, expert comedic timing, and tap dancing for days.

Introduced in 1934 with music and lyrics by celebrated composer Cole Porter, Anything Goes is a screwball romantic comedy which takes place aboard the S.S. American. Leading lady Reno Sweeney tries to help her friend Billy Crocker win the heart of Hope Harcourt, who is already engaged to Lord Evelyn Oakley. With the help of partners in crime Moonface Martin and Erma, Reno and the rest of the passengers successfully match up Billy and Hope, while Reno finds love with Lord Evelyn.

Yorktown's standout performer was Bella Houston as Reno Sweeney. In songs such as "You're the Top", "Blow, Gabriel, Blow", and the title number, "Anything Goes", Houston expertly conveys Reno's sharp wit and confidence through a rich, consistent belt and masterful comedic timing. However, Houston is not only limited to acting and singing. Her dancing is smooth and poised, with a confident, relaxed air reminiscent of Sutton Foster in Broadway's 2011 revival. Another notable performer is Colin Lee as Billy Crocker, employing a crisp, clear, vibrato in "You're the Top" and "It's De-Lovely". Elizabeth Marshall (Hope Harcourt) also had strong vocals, displaying a beautiful mix and head voice in "Goodbye, Little Dream, Goodbye". Further, Drew Wright (Lord Evelyn Oakley), Matthew Aslaksen (Elisha Whitney), George Papantoniou (Moonface Martin), and Francesca Klesius (Erma LaTour) each fully committed to their respective comedic bits, earning plenty of belly laughs from the audience.

The glitz and glamour of the golden age was reinforced by brilliant technical achievements. While some costume designers forgo quality for quantity, Cassidy Greenwalt, Peyton Olsen, and Vivi Parsons not only designed countless outfits, but included beautiful details and embellishments, elevating the quality. Specifically, Reno's dress in "You're the Top" was hand-dyed to create a smooth ombre effect, and her corset in "Blow, Gabriel, Blow" sparkled with vibrant fire designs and hand-installed rhinestones. Greenwalt, Olsen, and Parsons also maintained historical accuracy by designing formal wear to include furs, long evening dresses, white ties, and tailcoats. Additionally, the tap dancing in the titular song was successfully amplified by floor microphones, courtesy of sound designers Gabe Cohen, Natalie Piersall, and Paisley York.
