Bringing Music to Every Home: How Piano & More is Transforming Lives Through In-Home Music Education

At a time when access to arts education is increasingly limited, Piano & More is flipping the script.

Based in Northern Virginia, Piano & More is a nonprofit in-home music school committed to bringing high-quality, affordable music education to children and families who need it most. By sending certified music educators directly to students' homes, the organization eliminates traditional barriers to learning an instrument: transportation, cost, and inflexible scheduling.

What started as a grassroots mission has quickly grown into a community movement.

“Music is more than a skill—it’s a pathway to confidence, creativity, and emotional well-being,” says CEO and Founder Ron Dinehart. “We believe every child deserves that opportunity, no matter their zip code.”

A Model Rooted in Equity

Unlike traditional music programs, Piano & More removes the need for commuting to a studio or purchasing expensive equipment upfront. Instead, the organization works with families directly, offering free or low-cost piano and music theory lessons at home—tailored to each child’s learning pace and interests.

The program is especially impactful for children with disabilities, neurodiverse learners, and those from multilingual households—providing customized lessons that meet them where they are, both literally and educationally.

Community-Driven Growth

Since its founding, Piano & More has reached hundreds of families across Fairfax County and the D.C. metro area. With the help of community donations, grants, and a passionate volunteer base, the organization has grown its team of teachers and expanded its curriculum to include not only piano but also voice, guitar, and early childhood music exploration.

In April 2025, FFXnow featured Piano & More's efforts to expand into more neighborhoods across the region (read the article here). As demand continues to rise, the nonprofit is actively seeking support to reach more students currently on its waitlist.

Why It Matters

Music education is proven to boost academic performance, improve emotional intelligence, and build resilience. But for many families, it's simply out of reach. That’s where Piano & More makes a difference.

Whether it’s a shy child finding their voice through song or a busy parent discovering joy in playing duets with their child, the impact goes far beyond the music itself. It’s about creating connection, confidence, and community.
