ARLINGTON, VA — IKEA will be opening a new "plan and order point" store in Pentagon City in Arlington this summer, the first IKEA store of its kind in the Washington, D.C., area.

IKEA's plan and order points are smaller stores dedicated to kitchen, bedroom and living room planning where you can find home furnishing advice and expertise. The company has already opened plan and order point stores in Europe and Canada. The Arlington location will be among the first in the U.S.

Founded in Sweden in 1943, the popular furniture, appliance and home furnishings retailer already has large format stores in Woodbridge at Potomac Mills and in College Park, Maryland.

This new customer meeting point at Pentagon Centre will be more conveniently located to better meet the needs of D.C. area customers and will focus on providing interior design planning with IKEA specialists, the company said.

“We are on a journey to bring the IKEA experience closer to our customers in city centers," Javier Quiñones, CEO and chief sustainability officer of IKEA U.S., said in a statement Wednesday. "We’re excited to introduce the IKEA Arlington Plan & order point, giving customers a more convenient way to shop our affordable home furnishing products and solutions."

Customers will have the opportunity to meet with IKEA store team members to plan and order home furnishings for home areas such as kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms. Arrangements will be made to have all items delivered to a customer's home or to another point of delivery.

IKEA Arlington will lease 5,012 square feet of space at Pentagon Centre for the meeting point-style store. The company said it chose the Pentagon City mall at 1201 S. Hayes Street in Arlington due to its ample parking and accessibility to Metrorail and Metro buses.

“We’re excited to welcome customers living in the D.C. metro area or the DMV to a new IKEA location this summer, with more to come in the future,” said Raquel Ely, market manager for IKEA U.S.

The plan and order point concept was "created with the unique needs of local consumers in mind, from the proximity to public transportation and delivery and assembly options, to the opportunity for affordable design services," Ely said.

Along with making plans to open new plan and order points like the one in Arlington, IKEA U.S. said it has made significant investments to improve its e-commerce offerings, including new IKEA family benefits and lower-priced shipping and delivery.
