Jail Time Possible For VA Man Charged With Indecent Exposure And Assault & Battery
Arlington County Police charged a 65-year-old man with indecent exposure and assault for a incident outside a Barcroft residential building.

ARLINGTON, VA — A 65-year-old Arlington man is facing multiple charges, including indecent exposure, after two people in the Barcroft neighborhood called authorities on Sunday night, according to Arlington County Police.
Officers responded to the 4900 block of Ninth Street South for the report of an exposure that happened between about 4 p.m. and 9:24 p.m. as a man threw items at a man and a woman inside a residential building. The man also exposed himself to the male victim, police said.
Police arrested the suspect, John Doherty of Arlington, according to the incident report. He is charged with indecent exposure and two counts of assault and battery. He is being held without bond.

Although Doherty was scheduled to be arraigned in Arlington General District Court on Monday morning, the hearing was continued to May 27, according to court records. He has a preliminary hearing set for Aug. 13.
The indecent exposure and both assault and battery charges are Class 1 misdemeanors, which each carry a potential sentence of up to one year in jail and/or a $2,500 fine, according to the Code of Virginia.

Doherty also has a hearing set for July 22 in Arlington General District Court, where he will face misdemeanor charges of trespassing after being forbidden and public intoxication, according to court records. These charges are related to an incident that occurred on Dec. 23, 2024.
