Local Hero: Yorktown HS's Amy Cohen Makes Every Student Feel Special

ARLINGTON, VA —When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented and changing times.

Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these heroes making a difference in their communities. We’re working to let all your neighbors know about these outstanding people and their stories.

This submission comes from Dawn-Marie Singleton, who nominated Amy Cohen, who teaches English at Yorktown High School in Arlington and taught Singleton's daughter.

How do you know the local hero?

Ms. Cohen was my daughter's English teacher last year at Yorktown High School.

What does the local hero do?

She is an English teacher at Yorktown High School and works with special education students as well.

Why do you believe the local hero should be recognized or honored?

Ms. Cohen went out of her way last year to be sure my daughter did not slip through the cracks in her academics. She corresponded with me often to keep me posted about grades and work that needed to be done. She really cared about my daughter — not just as a student, but as a person. She was always there if I had a question and went out of her way to be sure my daughter was on track and understood all her assignments. At the end of the year, she filled in as a case manager for my daughter and made sure that every teacher was on board and kept in the loop with any progress. Ms Cohen was a wonderful encourager and offered to lend a hand when my daughter felt overwhelmed.

What's one thing you want everyone to know about the local hero?

She really cares about her students!
