The American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk of Washington, DC, takes place Saturday, October 14, 8am, at The Tidal Basin, followed by a post-walk party. We are proud to recognize Making Strides participant and breast cancer survivor Amy Larson as one of the event's Faces of Hope ambassadors and thank her for allowing us to share her journey to inspire other survivors or those who have friends or family who have been diagnosed with breast cancer. To learn more or register for Making Strides of DC, go to: http://www.makingstrideswalk.org/washingtondc.

Amy Larson, diagnosed in January 2017 as a result of her annual mammogram, went through surgery, chemo, radiation and targeted therapy, plus is on a ten-year regimen of an aromatase inhibitor, which is a type of hormone therapy.

She says, “For my family, we were overwhelmed with so much love and support - meals, rides, walks. This was truly a life-changing experience that made us appreciate life and foster a commitment to give back and help others. I’ve talked to so many others in treatment, offering tips on how to deal with chemo, lending support, and encouraging regular mammograms.

I am so inspired to meet other survivors. I am also very encouraged by the advances in research to enable very detailed medical treatments and, I hope, find a cure in my lifetime.

While I was still in treatment and looking at cancer.org, I learned about the walk. I needed something to give me purpose, to see beyond what I was dealing with at that time (grueling chemo). That first interaction has inspired me to stay involved. I am honored to use my voice to advocate and educate the Making Strides message.

Be sure to get your annual mammograms. Listen to your body. When you’re overwhelmed with work, family, children, any number of obligations, don’t neglect your own health and well-being.”
