Metro Safety Shutdown Will Impact Blue, Orange and Silver Lines Through July 3

Repairs begin Saturday, with no service between Arlington and Rosslyn, fewer trains on Orange and Silver lines.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — The next phase of Metro's year-long SafeTrack repair program will be so difficult for riders that transportation officials are begging them to find another way to work for the next two weeks.

The second phase of the SafeTrack program will run from June 18 until July 3.

"Unlike the first surge, this is a complete rail shutdown," notes Metro General Manager Paul Wiedefeld.

Two stations — Stadium Armory and Potomac Avenue — will be closed and Blue Line trains will only run between Franconia-Springfield and Arlington Cemetery. There will also be fewer trains on the Orange and Silver lines.

Trains may be extremely crowded, especially during rush hour, according to a Metro statement.

Shuttle busses will be used in D.C. and Maryland to get around the closed stations, but they will be crowded and additional delays are possible due to lines.

"I would stress very strongly that people telework or carpool into their jobs," Wiedefeld said.

Arlington is increasing bus service during the shutdown, as well as adding bikeshare capacity and bike parking. The county will also have "ambassadors" in Rosslyn and Crystal City to assist travelers. More from Arlington.

Blue Line trains will operate every 12 minutes between Franconia-Springfield and Arlington Cemetery, according to Metro. Customers will need to use the Yellow Line and switch to Orange/Silver at L'Enfant Plaza to continue with their trip or use Arlington Transit (ART) Route 43 between Crystal City, Arlington Cemetery and Rosslyn.

Orange and Silver line trains will run every 10 minutes, according to Metro.
