ARLINGTON, VA -- Metro was forced to suspend service entirely at the Ballston Metro station Wednesday night due to a fire, according to a report.
Rail Transit OPS -- an independent organization that evaluates rail operations -- tweeted at 7:20 p.m. that WMATA had just suspended service to Ballston on the Orange and Silver lines due to a "reported fire in the area of the third rail outside the station."
About 20 minutes later, Rail Transit OPS reported that WMATA was beginning to single-track via the Vienna/Wiehle platform at Ballston.

Later, the organization noted that it appears that dry leaves that collected around the third rail were to blame. The WMATA Emergency Response Team removed the leaves and service resumed shortly after.
7:45P Source of fire appears to have been dry leaves that collected around the third rail just inbound of Ballston. #WMATA Emergency Response Team is removing the leaves and normal service should resume in about 10 mins.
