Millions In VA Lack REAL ID As Deadline Looms
With just two weeks before enforcement begins, millions of Virginia residents still don't have their REAL ID.

VIRGINIA — With just two weeks before REAL ID enforcement begins, only 59 percent of Virginians have obtained the identification that will soon be required for domestic air travel and to enter certain federal buildings.
Of the Commonwealth's more than 8.8 million residents, approximately 40 percent have not obtained a REAL ID, according to a new data analysis by CBS News.
And Virginia is not alone. The analysis conducted from April 7 to 18 found that at least 16 states are less than 50 percent compliant with the law, while 28 states are less than 70 percent compliant.

That means in more than half the country, as many as three in every 10 travelers may not be able to pass through an airport security checkpoint when REAL ID enforcement begins on May 7.
Who needs a REAL ID?
Virginia residents who are 18 and older must show a REAL ID, a passport, or other federally approved identification to board domestic flights or enter secure federal facilities, including military bases and some federal offices, when enforcement begins.

The REAL ID is similar to a regular state identification card or driver's license, but has a small star in the upper right-hand corner.
Federal agencies, including the TSA, will begin REAL ID enforcement on May 7. Agencies may choose to phase in enforcement, but TSA officials have been urging people to upgrade their licenses sooner rather than later "to facilitate a smooth transition."
The REAL ID Act of 2005 does not affect those who only need their ID for driving purposes or identification, and does not apply to those under 18.
A passport or a valid U.S. passport card can still be used to fly domestically and internationally.
What do I need to get a REAL ID?
To get a REAL ID in Virginia, residents can start the application online before visiting a Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles customer service center or simply fill out a paper application at a customer service center.
While the enforcement deadline is May 7, a REAL ID can still be obtained after that date.
Required documents to obtain a REAL ID in Virginia include:
- Proof of age and identity (i.e. birth certificate, U.S. passport, permanent resident card, etc.)
- Proof of legal presence
- Proof of social security
- Two documents proving Virginia residency (i.e. vehicle registration card, bank account statement, utility bill, etc.)
- $10 fee, plus the cost of the driver’s license or ID card you’re applying for.
Virginia does not require residents to get a REAL ID-compliant license or ID card; however, a standard license or ID will display "Federal Limits Apply" the next time it's renewed.
A valid passport will still be required for international travel.
