Power Restored to More Than 6,000 Homes Thursday Morning in Arlington, Alexandria

A huge boom could be heard Thursday morning, knocking out power to thousands on an extremely warm day.

More than 6,000 homes, customers of Dominion Power in Arlington and Alexandria, lost power Thursday morning due to power equipment failure, according to a company spokesman.

The power blinked off at 6,468 homes at 8:42 a.m. Thursday after a huge booming sound was heard in the South Arlington area; Dominion Power spokesman Chuck Penn says the sound was likely a "recloser" device opening and closing and locking out. The "lock out" isolates the faulted section from the main part of the power system. There was no immediate information about what caused the equipment failure, Penn said.

  • Alexandria: 4,057 without power
  • Arlington: 2,411 without power

Temperatures Thursday were expected to feel like 100 degrees, according to weather forecasters. The heat index Thursday morning, at 9:30 a.m., was already at about 91 degrees at Reagan National, according to NBC-4's Chuck Bell.

The power was restored to all the homes by about 10:30 a.m. Thursday.
