Snowstorm Changes Schedule For Arlington Schools, Government

The Martin Luther King Day Jr. snowstorm has led to changes to school and government offices in Arlington County for Tuesday, Jan. 16.

ARLINGTON, VA — Arlington Public Schools will be closed on a Code 1 status on Tuesday, Jan. 16 due to the snowstorm on Martin Luther King Day Jr. Day.

Along with the cancellation of classes, extracurricular activities, games, team practices, field trips, adult education classes, and programs in Arlington County schools and on school grounds are canceled.

Unless otherwise directed by their supervisors, APS custodial and maintenance staff should report to work at their scheduled time on Tuesday.

Arlington County's government will open in-person facilities at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, unless otherwise stated.

For the federal government, all federal offices will be closed on Tuesday. "Maximum telework" is in effect, according to the Office of Personnel Management.

Unless otherwise directed by their agencies, emergency employees are expected to report to their worksite on Tuesday.

Federal employees who work remotely or telework are generally not eligible for weather or safety leave, so all telework employees and remote workers are expected to work on Tuesday.

For trash and recycling pickup in Arlington, curbside trash, recycling, and yard waste collection was canceled on Monday, Jan. 15 due to the snow. Curbside collection will shift by one day for all routes, according to the county. Arlington County has not changed the status of trash and recycling pickup for Tuesday, Jan. 16.

As the storm winds down, a total of 3.4 inches of snow fell at Reagan National Airport in Arlington. A winter storm warning will remain in effect until 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

The rest of Tuesday will remain cloudy, with a high temperature of 33. Winds will increase to 13 to 18 mph, with possible gusts as high as 29 mph, according to the National Weather Service.

Temperatures are expected to drop into the teens Tuesday night. On Wednesday, sunny weather will return, but the high temperature will be only 28. More windy weather is expected on Wednesday.
