Synetic Theater Informed By Landlord To Vacate Crystal City Location

Synetic Theater is looking for a new home after learning from its landlord that it must vacate its current space in Crystal City in 2024.

ARLINGTON, VA — Synetic Theater in Crystal City is starting to look for a new home after learning from its landlord that it will need to move out in 2024.

In a message to supporters, Synetic founding artistic director Paata Tsikurishvili said landlord JBG Smith Properties told the theater it will need to vacate the space at 1800 S. Bell St. in Crystal City as "part of Arlington County’s planned, ongoing redevelopment efforts in the neighborhood."

The theater, founded by Tsikurishvili and his wife Irina in 2001, is "working to secure reliable local spaces to continue our work," Tsikurishvili said in the message.

Synetic said it still has many more performances, including “Cryano de Bergerac,” which opens on July 14, before the conclusion of its 2023-24 season at the Crystal City location.

“Right now, we are focused on serving our community of artists, audiences, and students through the next 10 months, while concurrently working to secure reliable local spaces to continue our work,” Tsikurishvili said. “Performances, new work, artist training and education programs will continue, but in the 2024–25 season and beyond, the setting of our work will necessarily change.”

Washington Business Journal reported that the theater is in talks with Arlington County about what spaces the theater can use in both the short and midterm after it lease ends in Crystal City.

“The entire Synetic team is grateful to the many people who have loyally supported us,” Tsikurishvili said. “We’ll share more soon, but in the meantime, we have five productions and nearly 100 more public and student performances.”
