Virginia COVID-19: Lowest One-Day Case Rise Since Early October

The Virginia Department of Health reported 719 additional COVID-19 cases on Monday, the lowest one-day increase in cases since Oct. 7.

VIRGINIA — The Virginia Department of Health reported 719 additional COVID-19 cases on Monday, the lowest one-day increase since Oct. 7 when state officials reported 509 new cases of the coronavirus.

The current seven-day average of daily cases now stands at 1,117. Northern Virginia accounted for 191 new cases on Monday and has a seven-day average of 279 daily cases. Monday's additional cases in Northern Virginia were the lowest since Oct. 14 when the region reported 154 new cases.

The VDH reported a 5.4-percent coronavirus positivity rate on Monday from tests performed on residents over the past seven days.

The positive rate remains far below the 2021 high of 17.4 percent reported on Jan. 3 by the VDH. Since the start of the pandemic, the all-time high of the seven-day coronavirus positivity rate was 20.2 percent on April 20, 2020.

On average, 17,473 daily PCR testing encounters were reported statewide on April 21, down from a peak of 35,034 on Jan. 14.

As of Monday, 5,911,691 COVID-19 vaccine doses had been administered since last December. A total of 2,445,766 Virginians, or 28.7 percent of the state's entire population, are fully vaccinated.

In Virginia, 3,664,745 people, or 42.9 percent of the state's entire population, have received at least their first dose of the vaccine. The seven-day average on Monday was 74,315 doses administered in Virginia.

Local health departments lead the state with 1,717,124 total doses given, followed by 1,512,491 given at pharmacies. Hospitals have administered a total of 1,029,945 vaccines. Medical practices are next with 878,009 doses administered followed by community health providers at 774,122.

An additional 15 COVID-19 deaths were reported Monday, bringing the death total to 10,706. Virginia's COVID-19 hospitalizations stood at 971 statewide on Monday.

The current count includes 251 patients in intensive care units and 122 on ventilators. Ventilator use among all hospital patients is at 28 percent, and ICU occupancy is at 77 percent, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association.

In the United States, 32.1 million people have been infected by COVID-19, and 572,226 people have died, Johns Hopkins University reported Monday.
