What's Open, Closed For New Year's 2025 In Arlington
As 2025 begins, there will be various closures and schedule changes for the New Year's holiday in Arlington.
ARLINGTON, VA — After closures during the Christmas holiday, residents will get more a week later as they count down to 2025.
This year, New Year's Day falls on Wednesday, Jan. 1 and may result in holiday closures and schedule changes on Dec. 31 as well. In Arlington, schools continue to be closed for the extended winter break. Local government offices and some other services will be closed for several days.
Here are all the openings and closings to know around Arlington County for New Year's Eve on Dec. 31 and New Year's Day on Jan. 1.

Arlington County government offices and services: Operating on modified schedules for the New Year’s holiday, is closed on Jan. 1.

Arlington Public Schools: Schools are on winter break through Jan. 3.
Courts: The Arlington courts are closed Jan. 1
Parking: Permit parking is always in effect unless specifically noted on the sign. Meters are not enforced on holidays.
Libraries: Closed at 5 p.m. on Dec. 31 and closed all day on Jan. 1.
Trash Pickup & Recycling: Curbside Routes – No collection on New Year’s Day. Regular Wednesday routes run on Thursday, Jan. 2; regular Thursday routes run on Friday, Jan. 3; regular Friday routes run Saturday, Jan. 4 The same shift of a day will take place with the New Year's holiday.
Department of Motor Vehicles: All DMV customer service centers are closed on Jan. 1.
Metro: Metro's shutdown of some downtown stations will end on Dec. 31. Metrorail's regular weekday service will be offered on Dec. 31 from 5 a.m. to 2 a.m. with free fares after 8 p.m. Reduced Sunday service will be offered from 7 a.m. to midnight on Jan. 1.

- STAR – Office and Call Center closed. Call in advance to book rides for holiday and the day after.
Parks & Recreation Facilities & Programs: All Community Centers, the Long Bridge Aquatics & Fitness Center and administrative offices will be closed on Jan. 1.
Animal Welfare League of Arlington: AWLA will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 1 and re-open for regular business on Thursday, Jan. 2. For animal-related emergencies, call 703-931-9241 and stay on the line to speak to our answering service.
