Here's five upcoming events and activities in and around Burke.

There's plenty of local events happening in the Burke community and nearby almost every day.

Here are five suggestions on events you can check out today (and some to look forward to over the weekend).

  1. Why wait until Friday to hear some great music? The Chairman’s Concert Series “Evenings on the Ellipse” will feature the band Little Red & The Renegades. All concerts are at the Fairfax County Government Center, 12000 Government Center Pkwy., in Fairfax from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. All ages are welcome.
  2. There’s an origami workshop for kids ages 6-12-years-old at the Burke Centre Library on Thursday at  3 p.m. Volunteers from local middle schools will serve as instructors.
If origami’s not your style or your child’s a bit older and has a knack of improvisation, the Kings Park Library has an Improv and Comedy Theater Workshop on Thursday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for ages 12-18-years-old.
  3. Want to know what kinds of bugs go bump in the night? Hidden Pond Nature Center, located at 8511 Greeley Blvd., in Springfield will host a “Campire Fire: Bugs and Spiders” event on Friday at 7:30 p.m. And yes, there will be s’mores, so gather the family and your little ones for a night of tales.
  4. Are you a nature lover? Check out dragonflies, turtles, frogs and more at the Green Spring Gardens Family Fun: Pond Party in Alexandria on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.  The event costs $6 per person. Green Spring Gardens is located at 4603 Green Spring Rd.
