Updated: Springfield Man Arrested in Fatal Car Accident

Police say the man was driving while intoxicated, with two passengers, including a three year-old child, in the car with him.

It was later reported that Sanchez-Ramos is in the country illegally, having been deported to his native Honduras in 2004, but returning to the United States sometime afterward. Sanchez-Ramos was also driving with suspended license, having lost it previously due to drunk driving. He faces a number of charges including manslaughter.

A Springfield man has been arrested in a car crash which killed a man and closed down Route 1 for approximately four hours.

According to Fairfax County police, 54 year-old Paul Krause of Fairfax Station was driving his Ford Fusion in the northbound lane of Route 1 at approximately 5:20 p.m. when it was struck by a 1994 Honda traveling in the same direction. The collision sent Krause’s car into the southbound lane where it struck an oncoming Mercedes (pictured above).

Police say the driver of the Honda, 33 year-old Carlos Sanchez-Ramos of Springfield, was driving while intoxicated. Sanchez-Ramos had two passengers in the vehicle, a three year-old child and a 31 year-old male. After the crash Sanchez-Ramos fled on foot but was apprehended nearby. The three year-old did not sustain any injuries. The 31 year-old sustained minor injuries and was taken to a local hosital.

The occupants of the Mercedes were a 77 year-old man and a 73 year-old woman. They were taken by ground transport to INOVA Fairfax with non life-threatening injuries.

Krause was taken by Medi-Vac to INOVA Fairfax where he was pronounced dead at 7:44 p.m.

Sanchez-Ramos is being charged with aggravated involuntary manslaughter, driving while intoxicated, driving on an alcohol-related revoked license, child endangerment and two counts of felony hit and run. It was later reported that Sanchez-Ramos is in the country illegally, having been deported to his native Honduras in 2004, but returning to the United States sometime afterward.
