Week Ahead: Sales Tax Holiday, Mariachi Los Amigos at Royal Lake Park

Virginia’s August Sales Tax Holiday on School Supplies and Clothing is this weekend. From Friday, Aug. 2 through Sunday, Aug. 4, purchases of qualifying school supplies selling for $20 or less per item, and purchases of qualifying clothing and footwear selling for $100 or less per item, will be exempt from sales tax.
The Fairfax County Animal Shelter temporarily stopped taking in dogs last Friday after dogs at the shelter began showing symptoms of an unknown respiratory illness. The test results from that illness are expected to be released this week.
The Al Washingtonia will kick off the final month of performances for the Braddock District Summer concert S=series on Friday, Aug. 2 at 7:30 p.m. at Lake Accotink Park in Springfield.
The Bavarian group Al Washingtonia won't be the only performers ushering in August for the concert series. The Mariachi Los Amigos will bring their mariachi sound to Royal Lake Park in Fairfax on Friday, Aug. 2, also at 7:30 p.m.
The Unified Prevention Coalition of Fairfax County will host a “Perils of the College Drinking Culture” forum and panel discussion in nearby Annandale on Wednesday, July 31 from 7-9 p.m. The forum will be in the Ernst Community Cultural Center on the Annandale campus of Northern Virginia Community College.
