Winter Storm Forces VDOT To Reschedule Planned Closure Of I-66 West In Centreville

VDOT is moving up its planned closure of westbound I-66 in Centreville due to Friday's expected winter storm.

CENTREVILLE, VA — Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) has moved up a planned overnight closure of I-66 West in Centreville due to the winter storm that's expected to pass through the region stating Friday.

Roadwork planned to begin on Friday night has been shifted to Thursday, when VDOT will close three westbound lanes of I-66 starting at 9:30 p.m., with all lanes closed from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m. All lanes are scheduled to reopen at 5 a.m. on Friday.

During the lane closures, all traffic will be diverted to Route 28 North. Drivers will be directed to exit at Westfields Boulevard and return to I-66 West past the closures via Route 28 South.

The National Weather Service projects that D.C. and the close-in Virginia suburbs, along with the Fredericksburg area, could get 3 to 4 inches of snow, while the western suburbs will see 2 to 3 inches of snow on the ground by early Saturday morning.

Despite the change in schedule, the rest of the planned closures will continue through Tuesday, Feb. 1 to allow VDOT crews to install a bridge beam. Here is schedule of this week's lane closures:

  • Three westbound lanes of I-66 will close west of Stringfellow Road at 10 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, and 9:30 p.m. on Sunday through Tuesday.
  • All westbound lanes of I-66 will be closed from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. On Sunday through Tuesday, all lanes will be closed from 10 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
  • All lanes will reopen at 7 a.m. on weekends and 5 a.m. on weekdays.

Traffic will be detoured onto Route 28 North on Friday-Tuesday nights following the same pattern as Thursday night. During the detour, travelers on I-66 West will be able to access the ramp to Braddock Road/Walney Road.

The beam installation is part of the ongoing Transform 66 Outside the Beltway Project.
