11 Days of Summer: Time for 9/11 Commemorations in Virginia

On some days, summer recreation has to give way to quiet reflection. Today, Wednesday, Sept. 11, municipalities, government agencies and community organizations across the region will honor those who died in the 2001 terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and the World Trade Towers, as well as those who lost their lives on Flight 93.

The last day of summer is Sept. 21. Or, you can look at it this way: The first day of fall is Sept. 22. Patch has found something for you to do each day as we count down until summer passes us by.

Among several events in the area, the City of Alexandria is hosting a 10 a.m. ceremony in Market Square at 301 King St. The purpose of the commemoration is to give thanks and pay tribute to those who responded on 9-11 without fear, acted without hesitation, and gave their lives to save others.

The ceremony will feature remarks from Alexandria Mayor Bill Euille, Alexandria Sheriff Dana Lawhorne, Police Chief Earl Cook, and Fire Chief Adam Thiel.

Arlington County firefighters and police officers will participate in a moment of silence as part of a commemoration of the attack. The public can join in the ceremony at 9:30 a.m. in the Courthouse Plaza, 2100 Clarendon Blvd.

There will be a 7 p.m. event in Prince William County at 1 County Complex Court in Woodbridge.
