WASHINGTON, DC — Metro is hoping to attract more riders amid high gas prices with a new $2 weeknight fare starting Monday.

On Monday, weeknight fares after 9:30 p.m. will have a flat rate of $2 for one way. Normally, the off-peak fares during night hours range between $2 and $3.85, depending on the origin and destination stations. Currently, Metro closes at midnight Mondays through Thursdays and Sundays and 1 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays.

Metro already offers a $2 fare on Saturdays and Sundays, as well as a $2 discount for Metrobus fare when transferring to or from Metrorail.

"As gas prices remain high and people continue to increase travel and commute to work more often, lowering the price of unlimited passes makes Metrorail and Metrobus an even more attractive option for work and pleasure travel throughout the region," Metro Board Chair Paul Smedberg said in a statement. "Metro is giving customers even more value with a flat Metrorail fare of $2 per one-way trip after 9:30 p.m. beginning Monday, June 27, providing a welcome savings to service workers and those using Metro to get to and from nightlife attractions across the region."

Metrorail service levels remain down from normal levels as many 7000-series railcars remain out of service after the October 2021 derailment. After a problem with the 7000-series railcars' axle assembly was found, Metro sidelined all 7000-series trains, about 60 percent of its fleet.

In coordination with the Washington Metrorail Safety Commission, Metro prepared a return to service plan to restore 7000-series trains by late summer. The first eight 7000-series trains were approved to return in mid-June and will transition to the Blue, Orange and Silver Lines to bolster service in July.
