Remaining City Hall Services To Relocate For Renovation Project In Alexandria

ALEXANDRIA, VA — All remaining services that haven't yet relocated will do so in January for the Alexandria City Hall and Market Square renovation project, according to the city government.

Some services started moving as early as August for the upcoming renovation project. The project will update City Hall, which dates back to 1871, wiuth HVAC, plumbing and electrical upgrades as well as modernized workspaces for the hundreds of city employees working there. Market Square, which has been a civic gathering space since the city's 1749 founding, will also get structural repairs along with the underground garage.

In January, offices moving to Tavern Square at 421 King Street will include the city manager's office, mayor and City Council offices, city attorney's office, and Department of Planning and Zoning.

City manager services will be available virtually or by phone at 703-746-4300 from Jan. 13 to 15 and will fully resume in person on Jan. 16.

Alexandria City Council Chambers will move to the Del Pepper Resource Center at 4850 Mark Center Dr. The first City Council meeting at the new location on the first floor will be on Jan. 13. Mayor and City Council services will be paused from Jan. 14 to 20, be available on Jan. 21 online or by calling 703-746-4500, and fully resume on Jan. 23.

City clerk services will be paused from Jan. 14 to 20, be available from Jan. 21 to 23 online or by calling 703-746-4550 and fully resume on Jan. 26.

City attorney services will not be available in person from Jan. 6 to 9 and will fully resume on Jan. 12.

Department of Planning and Zoning services will not be available in person from Jan. 15 to 20. Virtual assistance will be provided online or by calling 703-746-4666. Services will fully resume on Jan. 21.

In-person taxpayer services at the Department of Finance will move to the second floor of 4850 Mark Center Drive, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays. Payments will also be accepted at a drop box located at Bankers Square, 100 N. Pitt St., online or by calling 703-746-4800. The last day at City Hall will be Jan. 9 until 5 p.m.

The city previously announced the Old Town Farmers' Market will relocate to 100 block of North Royal Street and the courtyard at Tavern Square in January. The market runs on Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 12 p.m. year round. An exact opening date for the temporary location will be announced at a later time.

The City Hall and Market Square renovation is expected to start in spring 2026 and take two to three years.
