Smooth Jazz — Walter Beasley brings his saxophone to the Birchmere (3701 Mount Vernon Ave.) for a show that begins at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $35. Interesting fact: Beasley is a professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston.
The Planning Commission is coming! Retreat! — The influential Alexandria commission is holding a retreat from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at police headquarters, 3600 Wheeler Ave. The commission will discuss its schedule, community outreach, committee assignments, goals and policies and perhaps most important, updates on major ongoing projects. Free, anyone may attend.
Almost Bon Jovi — Living on a Bad Name, a Bon Jovi cover band from Massachusetts (not Jersey?) brings its high-energy act to Old Town’s Waterfront Park (1A Prince St.) at 7 p.m. for a free concert.
If you’re looking for a sampling of hits, deep cuts and perhaps a dose of bad medicine, check out this tribute act featuring guitar dynamo Ethan Brosh and radio personality Ken Pittman.
Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase and attendees are welcome to bring a picnic. No grilling or pets allowed.
