ALEXANDRIA, VA — A strong storm headed to the region prompted Alexandria City Public Schools to adjust its schedule Tuesday. Schools will not close early, but afternoon and evening activities are canceled.

This cancellation applies to ACPS athletics, band and other extracurricular activities as well as community programming on ACPS facilities and school grounds.

The cancellation does not affect polling locations in or connected to schools for the Jan. 9 Alexandria City School Board District A special election. Polling locations are open until 7 p.m. Tuesday. Questions about the special election can be directed to the Alexandria Office of Voter Registration and Elections at 703-746-4050.

Superintendent Melanie Kay-Wyatt told families that ACPS will monitor weather and power outages to make an opening decision for Wednesday, Jan. 10. Families will be notified if school operations are changed.

For Tuesday's cancellations, ACPS cited the significant storm impacts coming Tuesday afternoon and evening. The National Weather Service issued a high wind warning and flood watch for Alexandria and surrounding areas. The wind warning means forecasters expect damaging winds to knock down trees and power lines, resulting in widespread power outages and difficult travel. Winds between 25 and 40 mph with gusts up to 60 mph are in the forecast. The flood watch means flooding is possible from significant rainfall, particularly in streams, creeks, urban areas, low-lying areas and flood-prone areas. Rainfall between 1.5 to 3 inches will cover the region with possible localized amounts of 4 to 5 inches.
