The West Glebe Road bridge between Arlington and Alexandria is expected to be fully open in the summer after repairs to the structure.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — After repairs to address deterioration of a bridge connecting Arlington and Alexandria, it has partially reopened.
The West Glebe Road bridge at South Four Mile Run Drive is open to vehicles with one lane in each direction. Pedestrians and bicyclists are using a temporary bridge.
The bridge is expected to be fully open in summer 2023.

The bridge was found to have a structural issue during a 2018 inspection, prompting a 5-ton weight restriction and sidewalk closures. The southbound lane on the bridge was converted for pedestrian and bicyclist use, and another inspection in 2021 again prompted shifted lanes and a temporary walking path. Another southbound lane was closed in late March 2022, followed by a full closure to traffic in late April 2022.
Arlington County and the City of Alexandria are working together on the bridge replacement project. During construction, detours were provided through Interstate 395 and the Mount Vernon Avenue bridge. A temporary bridge for pedestrian and bicyclist traffic opened next to the bridge in July 2022.

The Four Mile Run Trail underpass at the north end of the West Glebe Road bridge remains closed for safety during the construction. The trail detours for about a quarter mile onto South Four Mile Run Drive and South Glebe Road with detour signage.
Updates on the bridge project are provided on Arlington County's website.
