Cash, iPad Stolen During VeloCity Break-in

An iPad and cash were stolen from VeloCity Bicycle Cooperative on Mount Vernon Avenue during a break-in that is believed to have occurred Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning, according to VeloCity cofounder Christian Myers.

The Mount Vernon shop is the headquarters for the nonprofit, which educates community members about bike maintenance, safety and other issues. Used bikes are refurbished at sold at the shop. 

Myers said he uses the iPad to make credit card transactions. The cash was stolen from the shop’s register.

Myers said he did not notice any signs of a break-in until he opened the register to make a transaction on Wednesday.

Along with the stolen items, Myers said a locked green cabinet showed evidence that someone attempted to pry it open.

The shop was entered through an elevated side window on the north side of the building that faces E. Custis Avenue, Myers said. He said police found evidence that a gloved hand was used to pull the window open. No prints were left inside or outside the shop.

On Jan. 21, a laptop, iPad and cash were stolen in a nighttime break-in at The Happy Tart bakery on Mount Vernon Avenue. The week prior, two gunpoint robbery incidents were reported in Del Ray, including a stick-up at Tsim Yung Chinese Carryout on Mount Vernon Avenue.

The Alexandria Police Department did not immediately return request for information on the VeloCity break-in and whether there is any connection to other incidents.
