Ebbin Outraises Moshasha In Latest State Senate Campaign Filing

Campaign finance reports have been released as state Sen. Adam Ebbin faces challenger Sophia Moshasha in the redrawn 39th Senate District.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Democrat Adam Ebbin is outraising his opponent, Republican Sophia Moshasha in the race to fill the Virginia Senate seat in the 39th District.

In his latest campaign finance filing last Friday, Ebbin reported that his campaign received $28,605 between July 1 and Aug. 31, according to the Virginia Public Access Project. Contributions over $100 reflect $27,880 of these donations, and donations of $100 or less reflect the remaining $725.

Moshasha, who entered the race in July, reported her campaign received $15,358 in donations between July and Aug. 31. The total includes $4,829 from contributions of over $100, $1,202 from contributions of $100 or less, $8,238 in-kind contributions of more than $100, and $1,087 in loans.

In total, Ebbin's campaign spent $170,677 for the reporting period. Starting with a balance of $293,757 on July 1, the Democratic candidate had $151,685 in cash on Aug. 31.

Moshasha did not have a starting balance on July 1 and spent $9,459 during the reporting period. The Republican candidate ended the reporting period with $5,899 in cash as of Aug. 31.

All Virginia House and Senate districts are up for election on Nov. 7, 2023 with redrawn districts. The new 39th District covers the City of Alexandria and parts of Bailey's Crossroads, Seven Corners and Arlington. The Virginia Public Access Project labels the 39th Senate District as a strongly Democratic district.

Ebbin, has been a member of the Virginia Senate since 2012 and served in the Virginia House from 2004 to 2012. According to Ebbin's campaign website, his priorities in the state legislative have included addressing gun violence, improving voting access, pushing for equal rights and more.

Moshasha, a technology professional, has prioritized education and workforce development, especially for the technology jobs of the future. Her campaign also focuses on addressing traffic congestion and transportation infrastructure and supporting small businesses.
