Former Magistrate Charlotte Scherer Enters Alexandria City Council Race
Charlotte Scherer, a candidate in the City Council Democratic primary, is vying to be Alexandria's first transgender council member.

ALEXANDRIA, VA — Charlotte Scherer, an Alexandria resident with a legal background, is seeking a Democratic nomination for Alexandria City Council and could become its first transgender member.
Scherer, who identifies as an "out-and-proud transgender woman," announced her run for City Council at an Alexandria Democratic Committee meeting on Tuesday. Scherer, is a former Alexandria magistrate and former assistant public defender who has experience as a trial lawyer and is a member of the Virginia State Bar, Florida Bar, the District of Columbia Bar, and the United States Supreme Court Bar.
According to a news release, Scherer's campaign priorities include improving housing affordability, investing in infrastructure, community services and education, expanding transportation options, improving water and sewer management, working to reduce crime and funding public safety services, encouraging smart business growth, supporting collective bargaining and promoting inclusivity. She also supports giving close scrutiny to the Potomac Yard entertainment district proposal, promoting environmentally-friendly practices in development, and promoting transparency in government.

Scherer has been involved with the Alexandria Democratic Committee, serving as a precinct captain for the Charles Houston precinct, canvassing for Democratic candidates in state and local elections, and organizing a voter registration drive at the Braddock Road Metro in 2016. She and her wife, Dana Scherer, live in the city near Old Town.
Alexandria City Council has six members in addition to the mayor. The primary election in Alexandria is scheduled for June 18, 2024, while the general election will happen on Nov. 5, 2024.
