ALEXANDRIA, VA — The former Kaizen Tavern has been revamped as a new concept focused on Japanese and Filipino cuisine.

Zuki Moon is open at 1909 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria, VA. Stacey Wharam, who also owns Fontaine Bistro and Grape + Bean Rosemont, is still involved with the restaurant, as well as Chef "Kelvin" Aung Pyae Sone. The restaurant is inspired by a character named Zuki, who is half-Japanese, half-Filipino and experienced food from both cultures.

"We are so excited to embark on this new journey with our team and bring Del Ray such a unique concept, inspired by the authentic flavors of Japan and the Philippines," read a social media post announcing the transition from Kaizen Tavern to Zuki Moon. "We hope to see you all soon and thank you again for your friendship and patronage!"

During the soft opening at Zuki Moon, a preview menu is being offered. According to the restaurant's website, the menu is inspired by "our favorite culinary travels and adventures from the back alley street foods to the vibrant and colorful markets."

The preview menu includes small plates like lumpia spring rolls, tempura fried mushroom "Karaage Maitake," and Takoyaki, a fried octopus hushpuppy. Skewer options include Teriyaki Ribeye and Chicken Karaage, while sushi options include the Spider Roll, Angry Tail Roll, Crunchie Munchie Salmon Roll, Tuna Deluxe Roll and Veggie Roll. For entrées, choose between the Tocino Spam Musubi Bowl, Salmon Donburi and Spicy Miso Tinola Ramen. Finish off the meal with desserts like Ube Mille-Crêpe and Green Apple Matcha Mousse.
